Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to contest particular calls made by the official, following the protocol already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
