Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
