The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

As any significant awards ceremony nears, there’s always a clamor for the addition of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
