The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
